Jammers Squeezed by Hounds

The Jammers looked much improved since the first two season meetings, but not improved enough to best the Hounds who took the 7-4 win in the 3-hour game on Sunday afternoon at Winnemac Park.

Due to a time mishap by the designated starter, Tim Riggenbach performed the role as opener. He provided three outs, allowing one hit, and an early run. Atticus “Once I knew the actual game time I was there in 6 minutes” Conway showed up for his Sunday duties and held the Purples to 4 hits and 2 runs, claiming 5 strikeouts.

The bizarre rulings started early for the Hounds, with Matthew Steffens (2B) being robbed of a leadoff line drive ruled a catch on one bounce, harkening back to the 1845 Knickerbacker rules. The Hounds would still take a run that first inning on a Matt Burch (1B) RBI infield single. The bottom was quiet, partly thanks to an inning-ending hosing of a clearly confused runner at second by Hans Hetrick (C). Unfortunately, in the second, the Hounds gifted a run back on a quartet of walks. Thankfully, the Jammers would reciprocate in their next defensive half with 6 walks and an error resulting in 4 Hounds runs. In the bottom of the third, the Jammers took a lead-off HBP and looked poised to make the game interesting on a long drive to right center, but a striding and ranging Brian Lehman (CF) tracked it down and squeezed the out. Atticus fanned the next batter, but could not get the final out to strand the bruised runner, allowing a double for an RBI before ending the inning.

The Jammers relievers provided an unfamiliar challenge for the Doggos who had to really work for the rest of their runs. Insurance came in the fifth and seventh on runs by Phil Zelenka (LF). Reliever Brian Lehman shut things down, pitching 2 innings of 1 hit ball. The last of the seventh brought the tying run to the plate with 1 out and men on first and second. Zelenka grabbed a fly in left and Steffens slapped the leather on a soft liner to end the closer-than-expected and way-longer-than-usual game.

The Hounds have a packed work week before their campout break. The first of three consecutive game days will take place Tuesday against the Marlins at Southwest.
