After some bottom of the seventh heroics, the Hounds took the first two games of the K’s cup series, knocking off the first place Electrons Sunday morning at Winnemac Park by a score of 4-3.

Atticus Conway (P), perched atop a rehabbed Winnemac mound, hurled a gem, keeping a potent Trons offense to only 3 hits and 3 runs (2 earned) for the complete game win.

The Hounds wasted no time, putting up two in the first. Greg Sells (SS) doubled on a ball down the right field line and was later scored on a single by Pedro Rondón (EH), then Joe Malafronte (3B) slapped a grounder up the middle and Tony Correa (C) whacked an RBI to put the Doggos up by two. The Electrons middle of the order responded with two in the top of the next inning, capitalizing on two leadoff walks, and an error on a bunt. Saving the Hounds from a potential big inning, the shortstop Sells turned one out into two by taking a force out, recognizing a throw to first would be futile, and quickly turning and pegging the lead runner at third base. In the Hounds half, Tim Riggenbach (DH) oppo’ed a single and was scored by hero-of-the-day Brandon “Please Put Broccoli on my Pizza” Jessee (CF) and the Hounds retook the lead. The Electrons scored for the tie in the fourth on another unfortunate walk and error combo before the defense tightened up for good, allowing only one baserunner for the duration of the game. That single baserunner did make a threat in the top of the seventh inning, thanks to a well-executed half-swing/half-bunt sacrifice, but the opponents followed that up with a ground out to Matthew Steffens (2B) and routine fly-out to the outfield.

In the final half of the final frame, Brandon Jesse came up to the plate with two outs and Hans Hetrick (DH) on second base, the veteran reaching base when a potential double play became “effectively a sacrifice bunt” thanks to an errant throw to the first baseman. The Electrons made what became the biggest mistake of the day, shifting the right fielder in. Brandon then lofted a deep ball to right center, scoring the huffing Hetrick from second base and sealing the victory on the day. Jubilant, players rushed the field to join Jessee rounding second.

The Hounds along with the Electrons gathered at K’s, where the colorful player of the game was treated by his opponents to a shot of Malort. The two teams chowed down on pizza and drank buckets. The Doggos will have a few days off before taking the field on Thursday against the Blazers at Winnemac.
