Hounds win on Mother’s Day

The Chicago Hounds slaughtered the Garcia family today 13-1 in 5 innings at Winnemac Park on Mother’s Day. The newly formed Trojans were overmatched by their former teammates, managing to plate only 1 run in the slaughter-shortened game (by league rule, 15+ after 4 innings, 12+ after 5 or 6 innings). It was a very cold and windy day at Winnemac, and the Hounds took advantage of the Trojans, as it might be said after at K’s, “maybe it had never growed forward” (I honestly do not know what that means, but I wrote it down).

Future theologian Casey Peterson (#30, P) threw all 5 innings in front of his family from Phoenix just after his graduation from North Park University. Peterson walked only 1 batter, hit one, and allowed up only 3 hits and 1 earned run. He also had 5 K’s in his 5 innings. Peterson also took an in-game photo with teammates as the only player he walked writhed in pain at first base after “breaking” or “dislocating” his shoulder on a pick-off play dive back to first. Future opponents: beware the rare and deadly pickoff from Peterson, it is potentially injurious.
Hounds fans in attendance (beyond the Peterson family) included Laura Grieger, M.S., CF-SLP, Melanie Harmon, and Juan Garcia.

Nearly every Hound scored today as the Hounds tallied 13 runs in only 4 batted innings. The Charlies would all agree that the Hounds legitimately batted around in the first inning as Tony Correa (#13, DH), Nick Schmidt (#23, RF/EH), Joe Johnston (#20, 2B), Matt Burch (#6, 1B), Tim Riggenbach (#8, EH/RF), Nick Ingram (#36, LF), Hans Hetrick (#18, C), and Matthew Steffens (#5, SS) all scored. Johnston, Riggenbach, and Ingram all scored again in the second, and Correa and Schmidt scored again in the 3rd. Brian Lehman (#2, 3B) reached safely 2 more times today, and Arron Kruse (#11, 2B) drove in a run on a fielder’s choice. Burch, Johnston, and Ingram all had doubles, Johnston and Riggenbach had 2 RsBI, and Ingram had 3 runs batted in on the day.

The Hounds played error free baseball today, and looking back it seemed as if Lehman made all 10 field outs from third base (1 time helped nicely with a scoop by Burch at first). (Turns out Lehman actually made 5 plays at the hot corner)
As it has been said in at least one baseball movie, winning 2 games in a row = a winning streak. The Hounds are now 2-1 and next play the 0-3 Vikings on Wednesday at 5:50 pm at Winnemac Park. We hope to see you there.
